One coat stain blocking

ICL Innovation, a technology incubator for the ICL group, seeks a novel additive that allows one coat stain blocking in paints and coatings

Our criteria

Background

The goal is to be able to block all sorts of stains in one coat. Stains come from different sources including the wood itself which contains tannins. Some woods e.g. redwood have higher tannin content than others. Tannins are water soluble and can migrate from the wood to the paint surface leaving behind an undesirable discoloration. Other types of stains include nicotine, crayons, food stains, make-up stains. Our goal is to apply one coat of paint which can stop this bleeding and migration of these stains to the top surface. Today, tannin stains are blocked using a 2-coat system (primer containing tannin stain blocking pigments followed by a topcoat). Solvent-based coatings are able to resist this staining but because of VOC regulations these types of paints are undesirable for interior use. These tannin stain blocking pigments are usually based on cationic materials (Zn2+, Al3+, Zr4+, Ba2+) which can chelate phenolic tannin stains. These pigments however only work in a two-coat system.

As a leading manufacturer of phosphates, phosphoric acid and specialties, ICL Performance Products is committed to innovative research spanning diverse applications. Advanced Additives, a business unit in ICL PP is currently expanding into two major markets: Paint and Coatings, and Asphalt.

Our research and development laboratories in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia are staffed with industry experts and state of the art analytical and application equipment. Utilizing R&D best practices we have developed many patented technologies, proprietary products/processes and new applications. We are dedicated to a culture of learning and keep abreast of market and research trends via customer partnerships, academic collaboration and industry trade association participation.

We Offer:

IP Collaboration

The proposal would need to clearly describe the technical concept (chemical approach, structure if IP protected) and proof of concept results, if available. Information on ICL's current product line can be found in the ICL PP web page.

As a technology incubator, ICL Innovation is looking only for innovative technologies that may be further developed and commercialized through a business unit in ICL.
